Re: Maximum USB

For motion detection and lookout operation - Gotcha 3.0.6.9 (single cam version), configured to send the registered video to a remote location.
For realtime monitoring(audio&video), streaming and remote control... my applications.

I have two webcams and a spare usb hub and would very much like
to check out the usb option first. If it works for me then I will stick to it.

What application are you using ? one that you wrote ?

I think that an analog B/W camera is more expensive than a color USB one, with mic included.
More than that, the driver of the USB cam can do all the adjustments automatically (like sensibility, number of frames per second, contrast, etc.). Especially for suveillance, where you don't need 25 frames/s, decreasing the frame rate to 5 or 3 frames/s can give you much better quality al low light (s/n ratio).

Other dissadvantages of analog cams in surveillance:
      - separate power supply (cheaper ones can get a lot of power)
      - cheaper capture cards need a lot o processing power to capture the video

A very good surveillance application, cheaper for single cam but much more expensive in multicam version is Gotcha! (see http://www.gotchanow.com/ ).
Unfortunately, the multicam version doesn't work with standard USB cams.

One of my webcams is connected to the Gotcha application and accessible on the Media Encoder too, as a Screen Capture (a small trick..:) ).

      Any other opinions?

      Dan

I have just thought of a potenial solution

I have a av hub with remote control (about 30quid)
I have a tv card which was 15pounds.

I could control the signal i want to monitor by remotly controlling
            the av hub via infrared.

All i would need are some budget cameras (b/w) and software that is it
            i think

anyone see a problem with this ? what software could i use

First public version will be a small client with a mediaplayer frame inside and a listbox with all the available source at the encoder.
You will be able to remotely select one of (let's say) 4 USB connected webcams.
The list will be loaded at startup with all the available source (can be audio, video or AV).
In this moment I have 3 USB webcams (with mic included) and the AV receiver output connected to a Pinnacle Lynx USB AV cable (again with his own mic).

In that way, I can use the system not only for surveillance purpose, but even to remotely select one of the home entertainment system AV sources (vcr, sat, TV, DVD) using Infrared Remote Manager.
Even when I am abroad, I can see my favourite radio/tv program using Windows Media streaming.

                  Sounds interesting for you?

                              Hi,

I make some tests. Theoretical limit is 5m per segment for  a maximum of 5 segments.
Practically, using STP cable I get reliable connection even at 10m. It is possible to get even more.
You can use the 8 wire like that:
                              - 4 for the standard usb pins
                              - 2 for power supply GND
                              - 2 for  +5V for the powered hub.
Take care that it is possible not to be able to use 2 webcams on the same USB hub. Usually, one cam request aprox. 75% of the bandwidth.

                              BR,
                              Dan

P.S. This is what I use in this moment.
I will post in a couple of days, on my site (http://www.geocities.com/tdanro) a small application to select one of the AV source connected to a Windows Media Encoder remotely, when not home.
Is very usefull for surveillance purpose.
