Andy is correct and this exactly the way that the Bose system works, I
know I've used them! ;)
There are several systems around worth having a go at like the KEF's
mentioned (I am a KEF fan), the Eltax range get a good name and they
sound nice IMO and there are plenty others around, best bet is to take
your ears around dealers TBH.
For 5.1/6.1/7.1 the .1, as Mark H quite rightly pointed out, is a
dedicated non-amplified subwoofer output which connects on an RCA
normally and is an "active" sub with its own internal amplifier.
=
This is
*not* the case with the standard Bose set up, it is passive and meant
to
fill the bass and mid-range of the satellite speakers "fooling"
y=
our
ears basically into thinking that the tiny sats are producing a big
sound, it works well where space is tight but there are other systems
which, IMO, now rival or better Bose in this field. Polk, Eltax, Kef
are
only a few of the options.
TBH, if I were looking at these systems now I would look at the KEF
eggs
very carefully indeed as they are good looking and sound very nice to
my
ears for the money. Although Phil was on about a Mirage system which
may
well be worth a closer look as well. I am also looking at this Mirage
setup for another project but he reckons they were outstanding for the
money.
