I think you can with NTL, though I'd go for a network connection personally.
Certainly with ADSL USB modems, they perform worse connected to a PC than to
a draytek USB router, which perform worse than an ethernet ADSL adapter.
The same may well be true in the case of the CM stuff...

I used always buy with a view to upgrade, but more and more I find there's
not much to retain from the 'old' system and I essentially replace anyway -
eg memory doesn't suit new mobo, hard disk too titchy, graphics card
waaayyyy out of date etc. :(

Some will no doubt argue that if you want to use it for a firewall (which
you should really have if you are on broadband) then you MUST NOT use it for
any other purpose.   Others would suggest that what is acceptable risk to
you is good enough.  I fall into the latter category.
