David, if you want to do WiFi then you are going to need an Access Point.
These cost money.
For a little more, you could have an AP which is also a broadband router and
probably a network switch also.
There are a number of manufactureres of said items - eg SMC, Netgear etc.
I personally like Draytek stuff as it can do VPN for example, though these
are a wee bit more than other brands.
Check out www.seg.co.uk for them - there is a feature comparison table there
for the different models
Also, SMC routers are good, some offering a printer port which allows you to
have a printer on the network without needing a specific PC turned on all
the time.  DABS have these (www.dabs.com) eg the 7004AWBR - "A
platform-independent multifunctional router is combined with a 3-port 10/100
Mbps dual-speed switch and incorporates both a built-in print server, an
RS-232 COM port, and firewall security for protection against hackers and
other intruders".

On the quiet PC front the Via miniTX crowd contingent here probably
advise...
