I don't know Maplins... I am in Romania, but you can use ANY NPN transistor. The cheaper ones, in plastic case are perfect, like: BC171, BC172, BC173, BC174....

I don't think it is realy a bus.. just a bunch of output devices connected to the same line.

Just one remark... you need a pull-up resistor too, if no other is abailable on the bus. This can be considered as a terminator.
As the COM port does not have a permanent +12V signal, is better to put the pull-up resistor to the input of one of the oiutput transmitters.
