Projection displays

Anyone had any experience with either commercial or home brewed
projecting LCD displays ?

Like everyone I search for the perfect user interface. I personally
dislike the idea of screens in the wall but some things you just need
information pushed to you eg. Caller ID, MP3 track info etc.  The
idea
of projecting a two or 4 line display onto a blank wall only when
required is appealing.

Look at laser scanners but way too expensive at the moment (maybe MEMS
will be the answer to making them affordable).  Until then the
only
affordable way I have thought of is a small LCD screen with halogen
behind it and maybe a lens in front ?  This could be mounted on
the
ceiling like a spotlight.

Thoughts?
