Hi Shane
            Anything i have done with rs 232 i have used max232
chips............Rs485 i have used half duplex chips..havnt done any full
duplex stuff ...........i have used the LT 485 chip............It would be
nice to have an  on board link to enable or disable the terminator
resistor........Have a look at this link it has a schematic using  rs232 or
rs485 using a pic.......the tx and rx pins joined together and connected to
an i/o pin ( i assume half duplex)...................
