Yes, it runs Linux.

Yup, mine's plugged into my network via the addition of a 'TurboNet'
card to the box. There was a BB of these being planned by somebody
here I believe.

It works pretty well out of the box. There are numerous handset hacks
you can apply to tweak many things.

With the addition of the network card, or via a serial connection, you
can telnet into the box and diddle around. You can also install a web
server on it...

Kenneth's the DVD-R man I believe. It can save to VCR tape out of the
box, so I guess plugging a DVD-R item in there instead is the same
thing. As for DAT ... pass, I know nothing.

You *can* extract the audio/visual data over the network card
interface onto your PC. I've done that here using Don's excellent
guide.

BTW, have a gander at the UKHA_TiVo group...
