John,
TiVo is a PVR (Personal Video Recorder) and to sum up what it does in a
few paragraphs is nigh on impossible! Basically it allows you to record
all your programs to a disc drive internally within the unit and
playback as and when you want. This allows you a lot of freedom in how
you watch TV as well as a lot of other very neat features. The
important
one IMO is the season pass thing, where it will automatically record
every episode of a show for you without your intervention.
You can accomplish a similar result using a PC with a decent graphics
card and Show Shifter but this is not as neat a solution, nor as good!
I
think everyone who has bantered with me about TiVo over the past few
years, trying to tell me that SS is so good now has a TiVo and I
don=92t
think there is any debate now that the dedicated PVR is a far, far
better solution [you all know who you are! :D].
As to cost, well if you buy a TiVo from Comet today for =A3150 then a
lifetime sub for =A3200 you have a kick ass PVR for =A3350, or you can
go
for the monthly option of =A310 a month on the sub.
If you buy a TiVo it will change the way you watch TV forever, I can
guarantee that!
K.
