RE: Audio Amplifiers DIY

Shane,

I'd potentially be interested if it were xAP-controllable...

... that would, AIUI, suggest RS485. There are others far more technical than me who can explain why.

.. have you considered, however, ethernet control?

M.

Hi there,

Question for the Ians, Frank, Keith types out there in HA land.

Intention is to distribute whole house audio speaker outputs from node 0
(after considering all options).  I have had a 4 channel amplifier design
with digital volume control sitting around for awhile.  About to lay it out.
As some might remember I intend using Linet network for control.

I already intend having a 16C620A PIC device on the card so I thought, hey
... that has the same pinout as the 16F628 you xAP guys have been raving
about. The card is designed to plug into an edge connector (rack mounted),
why not run (in addition to the Linet control lines) a serial connection to
the edge connector.  Would mean substituting the 16C620A with a 16F628 and
using Maxim chips give RS232 or RS485 output to the edge connector. It might
then be slightly useful to someone else - you never know.

Now the questions.
1) Anyone actually interested ?
2) RS232 or RS485 ?

Depending on the answers I'll send another email requesting some design
clarifications for 2) !

Note at this stage I would only be implementing hardware support as I don't
personally need the serial connections.

Cheers
Shane
