You are contractually obliged, within the first 12 months, to have the Sky
box plugged into the telephone line.  BUT you're not obliged to keep mains
power supplied to it!  Sky cannot dial-in to the box, but they can (and do
according to a report in New Scientist) send a command over the air to get
the box to call them (New Scientist reported data was being uploaded from
the dodgy box to SkyHQ - probably "only" viewing habits but Sky, when
questioned, refused to comment).

Standard disclaimers apply as in:  If I were to have Sky installed then I
would let the engineer connect it to the phone line (enabling me to get the
subsidised price for the box/install).  As soon as the engineer left I would
disconnect the phone line and fit a mains power switch in line with the box,
(officially) only powering the unit up when viewing Sky.  If Sky sent the
"dial-home" command, the box would not be able to comply, Sky _could_ write
me a stinky letter but, Mr Murdoch, the box was not plugged into the mains
at the time...
