Oh, you want an answer? :-)

The answer is:
SWMBO's mum has a very cheap and cheerful point and click traditional
camera
SWMBO's dad has an SLR, everything manual, takes 1/2 an hr to set up
jobbie.

On holiday, 
mum's camera doesn't give good pics coz of limited options, no red eye
stuff, no zoom etc etc.
dad's camera does not give good pics because takes too long to set up so
the
moment is past or mum is asked to take the piccie or dad forgets to set
the
aperature correctly etc etc.

Can't be doing with a new fangled digital camera, and want something
somewhere between the two types.
At this stage, could still go for a standard camera however.....
many of dad's shots are landscape type things, and APS does W-I-D-E
landscape shots.

Yes, I know a 'serious' photographer wouldn't touch APS with a
bargepole
because the aps negative is about 1/2 the size of a 35mm one, the image
quality will be less when blown up etc etc, but then, he's got his SLR
camera for "serious" stuff......
