RE: OT: APS Camera Suggestions

Tony,

Can I ask why APS rather than a traditional 35mm SLR?

The reason why is that APS _actually_ takes a 35mm picture, and then includ= es some instructions to the developer as to where to crop the print. Many d= evelopers will crop 35mm prints to order, for a lower price than they charg= e for APS developing. Likewise, the prices for APS cameras are higher than = for equivalent 35mm SLRs.

SLR, means "Single Lens Reflex" - that's to say that the view thr= ough the view finder is actually seen through the camera lens, and then the= re's a little mirror that pops up to throw the light onto the film instead = when you press the "go" button. This means that you can far bette= r see what you're going to take, than with the cameras that have a separate= viewfinder that's just a window that "points in the same direction as= the lens."

Most SLR cameras sell the camera bodies separately from the lenses (obvious= ly, giving a package discount if you buy the two together.) What this, mean= s in practice is that it's cost effective to add a second lens (say, a much= bigger zoom) later, since you only replace the optics, not the electronics= and body as well.

For not much more than =A3150, you should be able to get a Canon EOS body, = and a third-party lens like a Sigma.

Second-hand lenses can be very good value, but they're the kind of thing yo= u can't buy sight-unseen... fortunately, you live 20 minutes away from one = of the top second-hand camera centres - Capital Cameras down in Crawley. (S= ister, amusingly, to unbeatable.co.uk)

Regards,

Mark

SWMBO's Dad is 70 RSN, so it has been decided to buy him a camera - not a new fangled digital jobbie, which any sensible person would want, but a mor= e
normal affair.

Anyone got any recommendations on APS cameras up to 150 quid?  Or even= a
link to a site that reviews said devices?
Key things are ease of use and ability to do it all manually if you really<= BR> want, but can point and shoot when it's SWMBO's Dad's SWMBO using it!

cheers,

Tony.
