A lot of systems can present this via SNMP, the Compaq agents can even
report down to the serial number of the disk drives (saved me hours in a
previous job as we were advised of a manufacturing fault on some drives, and
we had 80 servers over 20 sites to check).

If you're on Windows 2000, then there's some sample VB Scripts to gather
info in the Resource Kit, you could bodge these together and build into a
logon script
