The new Panasonic TH-42PHD5 does 1024x768 (for the reason you state I
think) for 3.5k - check out the ivojo link I posted earlier...

It's more than just contrast (though the AI intensity does help), the
Panasonic can display more grey levels (per colour cell) than any other
plasma. This means it can also display significantly more colours, so
you don't get banding in colour fades. That is why the image of the
Panasonic displays look so much more 3 dimensional.

The built in scalar also does a very good job of taking a standard pal
or ntsc image and de-interlacing it.
