I'm sure I read somewhere that DMX is a communications protocol that uses
RS485 as its physical communication standard.

Quick Google search brings up

which sort of explains it.

And RS485 is easily converted to RS232 (via MAXim chip or commercially
available RS485-to-RS232 adapter) so presumably all you need to do is get
your RS232 data in DMX format to the serial port...?
