Re: OT: Home Cinema Pics Online

Thanks James!

If you look at my lounge floor plan (Khanhouse.co.uk -> Home Cinema -> Speakers) you'll see that due to the vast sofa there was no room behind to put in rear floor standers, thus the ceiling speakers were a compromise.  As you say, the fronts are more directional.  Whilst I didn't go for the more expensive ceiling speakers, the next model up has adjustable directional cones to allow you to position the soundfield more precisely.  For now, they fit my needs perfectly and the sound is amazing!

I wanted the additional back channel so I could get every bit of enjoyment from my amp and the newer DVDs that support it.  It does make quite a difference to round out the surround effect - well recommended.  Actually the Denon supports 8 channel sound with two rear centres as well as the surround left and right - bit overkill for my medium sized lounge!

The amp can optionally post-process the sound and automatically create a surround back channel from the back left and right - this means that you can have 7 or 8 channel surround on any 5.1 dics (Matrix in THX Surround Ex? :-)  Anyway, for an extra 100quid for another channel it was worth the dosh.

The REL does a good job with the rest of the kit - you can use both speaker and line level connections and there is plenty of control over bass effect.

Regards,
-Dan

  Dan,

    Great site!

Couple of questions about the Home Cinema setup, as I'm trying to go
  down this route as well:

  -          Why mix in-ceiling speakers for rears and floorstanders for
front L/R ? Presumably the front L/R provide extra clarity/quality and
  are more directional?

  -          Why the additional single surround back speaker, and does
this really give you any additional sound quality over the Rear L/R
  speakers?

  -          Does the REL sub mix in/match well with the B&W speakers?
