Hi Mark,
It is possible to go above the REN limit with no problems whatsoever.
:-)
It is also possible to be below the REN limit and have problems with
ringing
on certain types of phones. :-(
Many phones are marked as REN=1 when infact they draw so little ringing
current from the line that would actually be REN=0.1 etc.
A socket with nothing plugged in has no effect whatsoever.
If you remove the bell wire from terminal 3 and the phone stops ringing
then
you have removed its REN from the the line. Some phones also physically
disconnect the ringer when set to OFF which is a much easier way of
reducing
the REN.
If you disconnect the bell wire and the phone still rings then it was
originally designed for the US market and does not strictly conform to
the
UK 3 wire spec. If you have phones like that then the ringing booster
mentioned by others will not help as it merely applies a ringing signal
to
the third wire.
Hope that helps
Keith

I seem to be almost on the REN # limit for the phones in the house.
There are also several other extensions but without phones plugged in
to
them.
if I remove the bell wire from some of the extensions does
this reduce the REN for that phone, and free up more 'space' ?
