You can run ppp over the TiVo console serial port connection, and
connect it via a null modem cable to a corresponding serial port on a
server - use RAS under Windows, pppd under Linux. This gives the same
functionality as the ethernet card, albeit slower.
IIRC this is covered in one of the many TiVo Hacking FAQ's
