It's an Abit KR7A-RAID board (Athlon 1.8), with a couple of 60Gb Maxtor
drives attached.
I've not changed any drivers since I built the PC, as it's worked fine,
and
I'm always reading about driver issues, so I figured if it ain't
broke....

If your running raid 0 (basically striping) that implies more than one

In which case switching back to the chipsets non raid controller will be

Which motherboard do you have?
Usually highpoint drivers like to be matched with the highpoint bios
version.
The quality of the drivers goes up and down...
I've had 3 or 4 motherboards that have highpoint controllers.Can be a
real
pain to get working properly.
Which motherboard do you have? If I've got the same, I could tell you
exactly what works.
