Is there any way to use a TiVo simply as a replacement for a VCR?

no subscription has been taken, you could still access the Manual Record
facility (i.e. enter Date/Time/Channel/Duration). My manually set-up
recordings were still being recorded (even though season passes weren't).
So I guess you could still use it as a VCR without a sub.

If you do get a subscription can't you use your ADSL line for updates?
I don't like the idea of some gadget arbitrarily running up my phone bill
without me knowing about it. ADSL is both quicker and free at the point of
use.

The call that TiVo makes each day is FREE, and if you pickup the phone while
its connected it will drop the line and try later.
