It's the iPod plug-in that causes the problem I think. It is mounted as
a drive accessible from My Computer but (apparently), just copying the
MP3 files over to it does not work as the iPod will not recognize them
(the songs are stored in directories labeled F01, F02 etc). They also
don't seem to be stored in any logical order (although I didn't spend
much time trying to work it out). You can copy files from the iPod to
the PC OK.

Music Match (or the plugin) also wants to delete files on the iPod that
aren't on the PC if you perform a synch. This means that if you want to
use it on multiple PC's (or take it to a friends etc), this would cause
a problem. I got round this by copying the MP3's from the iPod to the
PC, adding them to Music Match and then synching. However, as stated
before, the synch would fail at various points (randomly) but not
indicate that there was an error. With a large number of files, this
makes Music Match unusable IMO. However, I agree it's pretty good (from
what I've seen) as a ripper/tagger.

The ephPod software (www.ephpod.com) takes care of the transfer
functions that Music Match fails in.

There are a number of reviews I found on the net that talk about these
problems (Can't remember where I found them though). A search should
turn up quite a bit.

Apart from these problems, the iPod is a great gadget although you need
to take care of the case as the mirror finish metal case can get
scratched very easily (when laying the device down on a desk with the
firewire cable attached - tends to move around a bit if not careful).

Paul,

Since the iPOD can be used as a firewire HDD I would have thought
transferring MP3's was just simply a case of copying files from A - B.
And
the MusicMatch software helps you organize your MP3's.

I haven't used Music Match with an iPOD, but as a PC juke box, ripping
etc
etc it is a fantastic piece of software IMHO.

My brother got one of these - great bit of kit but the supplied software
is pants (musicmatch). It kept on failing during the transfer (but no
error message) on several PC's. There is a free bit of software called
EphPod though that replaces most of the functions except for Internet
tagging and ripping etc.

I'm toying with the idea of buy two 20gb iPods
(http://www.apple.com/ipod).
I've not done any research into possible discounts, but would anyone
else be
interested in getting a bulk buy together and seeing what price we could
get.
If there is interest, I would also arrange a bulk buy of firewire cards
for
those that need them.

Email me directly rather than buy the main list.
