Title: Message
Kevin,

Thanks for all the info - for some reason I figured I would need a faster fps.

I first found the GV-600 on Henry's site but after a bit of digging I got to the manufacturers site and from there onto the European distributor's site at : http://www.sicherheitsteam.de/shop/endkunde_int/docs/start.htm

Here they list prices for all variants of all the boards available 150, 200, 600, 650, 750, 800 plus other bits and pieces (s/w, cameras, etc.).
The 750 offers 75 fps, isn't much more than the 650 and is about £100 cheaper than the 800.
Costs for cards are as follows:

Card      Inputs    Euro's    Sterling  Henry's Price

GV-600     4        415        £262       £299
GV-600     8        500        £316       £399

GV-750     4        675        £427        n/a
GV-750            825        £521        n/a

GV-800     4        835        £528       £599
GV-800     8        1040      £657       £799

Delivery to UK is €30 - £19 via UPS.

I think it's pathetic that you can't upgrade to more inputs at a later stage, perhaps it's something to do with the design of each card although it only looks as if you need to plug in another rail with more inputs on it.
Perhaps one of the electronics wiz's on here would be able to 'copy' your existing 4 port expansion board to see if you can plug it into your board to make it a 12 port board - should only cost a few quid by the looks of things.  Just a thought...

I've been looking at Xcam2 and Trust wireless cameras in the 2.4Ghz range but at about £100 a pop for a transmitter and receiver it's a bit much.
I'll have another look at maybe running a couple of cables and only needing 1 or two wireless cams.

Cheers,

Anto.

Anthony,

In my case I am quite happy with the frame rate I am getting from the GV600 (4fps is quoted with all 8 cameras operational). The less cameras you use though the better the frame rate (obviously) but additionally, as Jason says, there is a settling time between switching where the on board hardware has to resynch with the camera timebase. In more expensive setups the cameras are all synched together so they can be displayed and recorded much more easily at higher or even full frame rates.
When the unit does trigger (using the motion detection as this is the only low cost option) then it records only the camera sources that have motion in them but it still has to monitor the others in case they trigger too. You also need to be happy that the motion detection will work for you - for example moving trees or lights that turn on and off look like motion to the cameras, although the software includes excellent area masking for the cameras individually.
Henrys Radio url is http://www.henrys.co.uk/cctv/multicam.htm just in case you haven't got it. The GV800 is £400 more on this site - where did you get the £150 price difference from ? Lastly although all the cards, in the 400 series are identical the 'dongle' dictates how any inputs are scanned and active, and the manufacturer / Henrys will not allow an upgrade at a later date - really dumb and unhelpful.
Camera quality is quite important for good results, I have no experience of the XCams, btw using mono cameras does not speed anything up although you might hope it did.

Cheers Kevin / David,

Kevin,
As you say I wasn't able to find much info on the GeoVision web site - or anywhere else on the web for that matter!
What sort of fps would you recommend to get a half decent picture quality?
Bear in mind that most of the time there will be no movement on any camera until say someone approaches the front door or a car drives up to the garage.
Is it possible to dynamically set the fps between the cameras? i.e. if I have 25 fps available (GV-600) can I set set 4 cameras with a default of 6 fps then if movement is detected by the software in one camera it automatically switches that one to say 15 fps and the other 3 down to 3 fps - that would be nifty... (do I need as much as 15 fps, or more?)
The GV-750 looks like a better option but with 75 fps but is £150 more for the 4 camera option - do you think this would be worth it?

David,
Price wise the Trust 814 looks like a cheep alternative with many of the features of the GeoVision for a fraction of the price.
It may be a bit limited with what looks like only 20 fps available (although this is only slightly lower than the GV-600).
It may be a good way to dip my toe in the water but I'll have to wait for the new board to come out as I'm running Win2K.
Is this something you have used yourself?  - I haven't been able to find a review of the existing 804 board anywhere to find out what it's really like.

All I need to do now is figure out how to get the input from 4 wireless cameras at the same time - looks like I may need 4 receivers tuned to different frequencies.
The cost of this would be significantly more than 4 hard wired cameras but I'm banned from drilling any more holes in walls as the ball and chain is afraid the house may fall down.  :o)
As a cheaper alternative does anyone have multiple wireless cameras transmitting to a single receiver and therefore only needing a video capture card with one input?
If remotely viewing over the web is it then possible to dynamically control which camera to view from the client end?

No doubt I'll think of a few more questions for you all tomorrow..!

Thanx.

Anto.

Hello Anthony,
Yes - I use this card - I was at one stage going to write up a review for Mark's site but what with moving etc. it got delayed.
Overall I have been very impressed with the card (I have an 8 camera version) although less so with the support >from blame a lot of the issues on a non supportive manufacturer. These support issues have been nothing major - more feature issues.
There is now a new version of the card that supports an audio channel as well. The software supplied is excellent and extensive allowing full motion detection and remote monitoring and alarm signalling. It will allow all cameras to be visible on screen and will record from 'triggered' sources so it seems to suit what you need. Check the frame rate is adequate for your needs though, they do do a far more expensive card with a better frame capture rate.
My gripes have been around the 'closed' nature of the software and also the hardware trigger expansion card which is ridiculously expensive (more than the card itself) - so you can't reasonably add PIR triggering to the system or use any HA software to force a capture event. Also as you mention it the pan and tilt integration in the software requires this expansion option which doubles your cost and the implementation is non standard in terms of most UK camera mechanisms and doesn't support the Xcams which have a bespoke/budget pan and tilt mechanism.

Any specific questions just ask ---

    Kevin

To: ukha_d@xxxxxxxSubject: [ukha_d] Wireless multicam survailence for PC

Hi,
I want to set up 3 or 4 cameras around the house.
(2 or 3 outside, 1 inside)
I can't really run cables so wireless would be the best bet.
(Walls in the way and PC may move to another room at some stage.)
I want to be able to capture and display all the cams at the same time
on my PC and view them over the internet.

I have been looking at the GeoVision GV-600
http://www.geovision.net/e/products.htm available from
http://www.sicherheitsteam.de/shop/endkunde_int/docs/start.htm for 450
euros.

Anyone used this card or can recommend another card for the PC?
Also, would it be possible to connect 4 Xcam2's to this system to get 4
live pictures simultaneously, or is there a better solution?

Ideally I would like to be able to view the output on my TV as well and
have remote / PC / PIR controlled pan and tilt on one or two cams but
this may be asking / costing too much!

Anyone got a similar set up??

Anto.
