Re: Wireless multicam surveillance for PC

Title: Message
Hi all,

I'm playing with a 4 input card here, and it's not too bad. Software is a bit of a thorny issue, but if I can't find something soon then its time write my own. But too many projects on the go at the moment, so I'm limping by with 98 software...

The basic limit for a bt based card is I think 30fps. Divide by 4 and add settle time = 3-4 frames per second per camera.

If someone on here would just invent a time machine, or a time stretching machine would do, say 48 working hours in 24 actual hours I could get around to playing with Directshow under .net and write some win2k/xp software for it.

Cheers Kevin / David,

Kevin,
As you say I wasn't able to find much info on the GeoVision web site - or anywhere else on the web for that matter!
What sort of fps would you recommend to get a half decent picture quality?
Bear in mind that most of the time there will be no movement on any camera until say someone approaches the front door or a car drives up to the garage.
Is it possible to dynamically set the fps between the cameras? i.e. if I have 25 fps available (GV-600) can I set set 4 cameras with a default of 6 fps then if movement is detected by the software in one camera it automatically switches that one to say 15 fps and the other 3 down to 3 fps - that would be nifty... (do I need as much as 15 fps, or more?)
The GV-750 looks like a better option but with 75 fps but is £150 more for the 4 camera option - do you think this would be worth it?

David,
Price wise the Trust 814 looks like a cheep alternative with many of the features of the GeoVision for a fraction of the price.
It may be a bit limited with what looks like only 20 fps available (although this is only slightly lower than the GV-600).
It may be a good way to dip my toe in the water but I'll have to wait for the new board to come out as I'm running Win2K.
Is this something you have used yourself?  - I haven't been able to find a review of the existing 804 board anywhere to find out what it's really like.

All I need to do now is figure out how to get the input from 4 wireless cameras at the same time - looks like I may need 4 receivers tuned to different frequencies.
The cost of this would be significantly more than 4 hard wired cameras but I'm banned from drilling any more holes in walls as the ball and chain is afraid the house may fall down.  :o)
As a cheaper alternative does anyone have multiple wireless cameras transmitting to a single receiver and therefore only needing a video capture card with one input?
If remotely viewing over the web is it then possible to dynamically control which camera to view from the client end?

No doubt I'll think of a few more questions for you all tomorrow..!

Thanx.

Anto.

Hello Anthony,
Yes - I use this card - I was at one stage going to write up a review for Mark's site but what with moving etc. it got delayed.
Overall I have been very impressed with the card (I have an 8 camera version) although less so with the support from Henrys Radio (the UK reseller) or the manufacturer. Henry's also blame a lot of the issues on a non supportive manufacturer. These support issues have been nothing major - more feature issues.
There is now a new version of the card that supports an audio channel as well. The software supplied is excellent and extensive allowing full motion detection and remote monitoring and alarm signalling. It will allow all cameras to be visible on screen and will record from 'triggered' sources so it seems to suit what you need. Check the frame rate is adequate for your needs though, they do do a far more expensive card with a better frame capture rate.
My gripes have been around the 'closed' nature of the software and also the hardware trigger expansion card which is ridiculously expensive (more than the card itself) - so you can't reasonably add PIR triggering to the system or use any HA software to force a capture event. Also as you mention it the pan and tilt integration in the software requires this expansion option which doubles your cost and the implementation is non standard in terms of most UK camera mechanisms and doesn't support the Xcams which have a bespoke/budget pan and tilt mechanism.

Any specific questions just ask ---

Hi,
I want to set up 3 or 4 cameras around the house.
(2 or 3 outside, 1 inside)
I can't really run cables so wireless would be the best bet.
(Walls in the way and PC may move to another room at some stage.)
I want to be able to capture and display all the cams at the same time
on my PC and view them over the internet.

I have been looking at the GeoVision GV-600
http://www.geovision.net/e/products.htm available from
http://www.sicherheitsteam.de/shop/endkunde_int/docs/start.htm for 450
euros.

Anyone used this card or can recommend another card for the PC?
Also, would it be possible to connect 4 Xcam2's to this system to get 4
live pictures simultaneously, or is there a better solution?

Ideally I would like to be able to view the output on my TV as well and
have remote / PC / PIR controlled pan and tilt on one or two cams but
this may be asking / costing too much!

Anyone got a similar set up??

Anto.
