This was discussed in detail before, the ability to turn off said
appliances was seen as valuable. Specifically, the hoover could be
turned off when the phone or doorbell rang so that you could hear
them and the iron could be turned off automatically as part of
the 'leaving the house' event in case it had been left on after hasty
early morning shirt ironing.
