Yes, WS sets are available, but I guess that well over 75% of sets in the
field are 4:3...

Hi Mark,
I agree, and maybe my point wasnt too clear.
I fully appreciate that the purists will want the "original"
version
and have no grip against that being available.
What gets me is that, as you have said, the public easily get
confused. For several years the broadcasters and TV makers have been
saying 16:9 TV's give a more natural picture that fits the human
field of vision.
The price of WS sets has now dropped to a level where most people can
afford to buy one, in fact, unless you buy a "no brand" set it is
very difficult to find a large set that isnt WS.
So..... Mr Joe Public, having bought a Widescreen set buys the
Widescreen DVD. Pops it in the player and presto...BLACK BARS... one
of the reasons they were using as a reason why he should buy WS in
the first place.
It should have been released as 16:9 and the "Original Version".
As I
said previously, 4:3 viewers are used to a couple of inches of black
top and bottom of the screen but 5 or 6 inches is taking the
proverbial.
I suppose in 5 or 10 years time they will be persuading us that we
need 21:9 sets so that we can see films as intended. Then the film
makers will either go even wider eg 27:9 or back to 4:3 "so you can
fully appreciate the height" safe in the knowledge that by then
everyone would have a 16:9 set so would have to put up with a cropped
or bordered picture.

probably going to confuse the public, but it's a step in the right
direction and should be applauded.

"16:9"
and "original" would be too much, and practically lead to returns
all
over the place.

"16:9" would
annoy the high-end community who want to watch in the original aspect
ratio.
