RE: Spare server...

A quick paste from the MS website, as I could only find it in dutch, but
the table still makes sense.

          Win 2k Win 2k    Win 2k       Win 2k
            Pro   Server Adv. Server DataCentre
                                          Server
          -----------------------------------------
MAX CPU's    2        4          8           32

I can only relate this to the dual Xeon I have here. It is running Win2k
Advanced Server and is using both processors (I can see this in task
manager).  Why not bite the bullet and see?

OK - next questions for you.

Does the DiVx stuff take advantage of multiple processors? (The box has
4)

If so, which O/S and variant do I need. ISTR that NT4 supported up to
quad, but Win2k only supports 2 out of the box?

Because of this thread I am in the process of ripping a DVD on a PC with
dual Xeon 2.2Ghz chips and 2Gb memory.  My normal approach to ripping is
to do it on my "other" PC which is a PIII 800 with 256Mb ram. It usually
takes around 10 - 12 hours to rip.  The Xeon machine will take 1hour 32
minutes. That should convince you....

I know where I will be doing my ripping from now on ;-)

Pedro

P.S. Do you have one of your machines to sell?

Smartripper will still work for ripping.  To encode the DTS/DD you will
have to extract it with some other software and then tell Flask where to
find it. I know it's possible 'cos I've seen the option with flask to
get an external AC3 (?) track but haven't used it to do this myself.

There are some excellent tutorials on
http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/index.html . One of them may help
you.

Cheers
Pedro

Is it possible to preserve the entire soundtrack "as is" with those?

I'd like to be able to playback the Dolby Digital / DTS soundtracks
properly...

Ooh.... DVD-ripper / DIVX encoder ????

Simply add DVD-drive and go?

Can anyone recommend some good software... the advantage of +that+ use
is that the box could remain in the office...
