axis produce networked webcams, but they arn't cheap

An alternative might be the ukha_viaproject,

this is using a low-cost all in one motherboard, and CPU, with Linux,
initial plans are for an MP3 player, however some cheap USB cameras also work under Linux, the trust spacecam 200 (=A330.00 from PCworld) being
one.
