No need for shielded cable (in fact it's probably a bad thing here).
Standard (multi-core, flexible) alarm cable will be fine. Depending
on how the interface handshaking is specified, you may need 3 cores
(3 data + no hardware handshake), 5 cores (3 data + RTS/CTS
handshake) or possibly 7 cores (3 data+ RTS/CTS and DTR/DSR). From an
electrical standpoint, cat5 (shudder ;-) would also be fine, but
being solid core, is less ideal from a mechanical perspective.
