That was indeed the case.. however "can of worms" is the phrase
that springs
to mind...
And suddenly, I don't care! it looks okay in IE5 and IE6, Netscape 4,
and
Opera...
and that's more testing that 90% of websites get ;)

Ian,
Without seeing the page, my guess is that you're either not passing a
schema
(in which case the validator is probably defaulting to 4.01 strict), or
you're explicitly passing 4.01 strict..
FRAMESET isn't in 4.01 Strict, it's only in 4.01 Frameset.
Suggest that you put the following at the start of your document, before
the
HTML bit.
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Frameset//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/frameset.dtd">
