Gerard,

There's clearly no future for you as a politician. Fancy taking such a reas= onable, sensible viewpoint ;-)

It's far more socially acceptable to say that even driving 1mph over the li= mit, at 2am on a deserted motorway, is the moral equivalent of shooting bab= ies.

Personally, I support the lowering of speed limits near schools to 15mph, a= nd the introduction of Variable Speed Limits on motorways that, depending o= n conditions and traffic, allowed limits to be RAISED to, say, 100mph.

I also support the introduction of additional "vehicle classes" o= n the driving tests, so that, say, your normal test allowed you to drive a = vehicle with a power to weight ratio equivalent to, say, a 1.7 litre Astra = turbo diesel, but required an additional test, that could only be taken aft= er 12 months driving without any violations, to drive anything bigger ;-)

This is probably going to end up in a huge debate but ...

We all break the law when driving. That is a fact. Even if it's just 1
MPH over, you are still breaking law.

It then comes down to the degree that you break the law. Having the back out a public road at 2am on a road with no cars is infinitely more
acceptable than doing it at 5pm during the rush hour.

Personally, I have no problems with people breaking the law when on the
roads as long as the only person they are going to injury is themselves.
