I think X10 is probably the simple way to go for the moment, given that

don't want to rip the house apart completely to put in another system
type.
And as you say, it's also cheaper - I'm in Vectra country too!

I'm going to discuss normal alarms with my brother - he's the
alarm/electronics expert in our family, and can source components
fairly
cheaply.

I'll give regular updates on my progress.
