Hmmm, this looks like an interesting group as well....

What I meant originally about "not having an OS" was that it's so
cut
down and missing so many bits that it wouldn't be easy to use the XBox
as a general purpose machine (for HA or anything else).

It's still a lot easier to get things running on than the PS2 or
Gamecube though.

If you want something to hack have a look at the Dreamcast.  They're
incredibly cheap now, and you can get all the development tools pretty
easily as well.
