To be honest, I think that the evolution of DSL technology is more
likely to give you a viable solution before any wireless option
becomes cost effective.

There are several more "advanced" DSL technologies that, even
now,
are in late stages of product development with DSL vendors. Granted,
most of these are based on higher bandwidth over current distances,
but there are options for longer distances as well.

For example, See here:

http://news.zdnet.co.uk/story/0,,s2085345,00.html

As the DSL market takes off in the UK, the margins for providers who
supply to the "easy" urban areas will get squeezed as more
vendors
compete. Hopefully, this will force carriers to look at more rural
customers, who will be willing to pay a premium for access, and
therefore cover the extra installation costs associated with rural
roll-out.

GPRS has really been designed as a mobile standard, and as such,
using it for "fixed" access will always be quite expensive, and
there
will always be some overhead that is designed to allow roaming, which
you will never use.

One thing that might help you (and me), is that in NI, local
government is throwing money at people to provide broadband access,
and this might leverage someone to put together a suitable business
case.

Anyway...as I drove past them this morning I started thinking about
my lack of ADSL (and poor propects for it any time this century!).

through the web interface, it doesn't need to be highspeed as I have
ADSL to my desk in work and can download whatever I need from there.

GPRS or 3G mobile module to my HA server to allow this? Obviuosly
I'd need some sort of tarrif that took advantage of the always on
aspects of these services without a crippling subsription?
