If you go for the self install ADSL option, you pay a cheaper line rental,
but more importantly you can choose your own hardware router/firewall that
presents the ADSL connection on a proper ethernet port or hub, so saves an
awful lot of messing and cost.

I'm seriously considering chopping in my HomeHighway for this setup, since
once you get over the initial cost of buying the router, it will work out
cheaper per month. Even the cheapest ADSL option offers fixed IP 512k
bandwith for £24 a month.

I wouldn't bother messing about setting up a linux firewall or cludging
together a USB modem talking to a separate firewall/router. That route
sounds more hassle, and more expensive.
