Hi All,

Following on to the Barcode thread, I have just tested my theory on the
"Accessability Options" in windows Control Panel.

Under the "General" tab is an option for "SerialKey
Devices"

I set this up for COM2 at 9600 baud and set up the laptop with
Hyperterminal
at 9600. Connected the laptop com port to the desktop com port and was
able
to type into whatever window was active on the PC from either the the PC
keyboard or the Keyboard on the laptop.

This means that as long as the Barcode scanner sends normal ASCII text as
the barcodes all we will need to do is scan the item when the cursor is in
the correct place on the screen just as if it was a scanner with a Keyboard
Wedge.

This also has implications in other areas of HA.

If a Pronto or similar was programmed with the ASCII codes at say 300 baud
then a simple TSOP 1838 and TTL/RS232 level converted would allow the PC to
receive direct input from the Pronto. The codes could either be worked out
manually, or learnt from the PC by sending the ASCII codes out of the COM
port and using it to drive a 38kHz modulated IR LED

I cant test the last theory as I dont have a Pronto but I dont see why it
wouldnt work.

Keith
