Guys, just an aside...

if this exchange server is the mailhost for the domain, then e-mail will be
arriving at it from all over, not from a single up-line..

Not to mention that Demon's mail servers have about sixteen IP addresses

A firewall simply won't help, as port 25 will have to be open for normal
SMTP operation.

If you can't upgrade the Exchange 5.0, and this server performs inbound mail
functions, then you *need* another SMTP server in the way, which *can* be
ocnfigured to prevent relaying, whilst passing all domain email onto the
exchange host.
