Depends on your setup - if you have a router its not usually required.
On bigger networks people tend to go to the same pages, i.e. Bbc.co.uk
is a popular one so if the proxy server caches it all it means is that
it caches the data saving bandwidth and time loading the page for the
user.

I can see the benefit from the caching perspective but am lost as to
it's benefit in the context of enabling browsing the web and using
Outlook etc, after all I can browse the web on my network now and I
don't have a proxy server running (Or do I??).

Is a proxy server necessary in order to use Exchange?

Or am I missing something?
