I had my cat's done as well.

I have their unique IDs, and I am trying to source the AVID chip reader, which
retails for about 100USD. But I can't seem to find anyone to sell me one.
They do kits for lab systems (pharmaceutical labs etc) which include loads of
needles and chips plus reader, but not unsurprisingly they are unwilling to
sell them to "guy's on the street".

The Tech spec says it'll read the chips from 6-8 inches and has rs232
interface, and I have a cat flap on order which uses an rf collar and a relay
in the mech to release the flap, I am looking at logging the in/out data and
going to try and hook up something to make sure it _really_ is our cats using
it.

And of course put the data on the website.

"Hillary exited at 11:23am" etc.
