Ethernet MP3 Player
Good
grief didn't realise there could be so much debate about a simple post -
and at
the weekend too! Just to clarify:
The
comment about the Merdians is mine - I play my SliMP3 through my Meridian
system via Analogue connections it sounds nearly as good as my Meridian CD
player. I put the difference down to the lossy MP3 encoding (I rip at
320kbps -
disk space is cheap, quality usually isn't).
Sean
at
SliMP3 was comparing the analogue output of the SliMP3 to the digital
output of
the Audiotron - don't know why the comment about coax since as someone
pointed
out the audiotron seems to have optical digital output. There have been a
couple of other posts on the SliMP3 group and generally there seems to be
agreement that the analogue output of the Audiotron is "less than
perfect" but that it would be nice to have digital output on the
SliMP3.
Personally
I can't see the need for digital output - MP3 encoding will always be the
bottleneck as far as quality is concerned. I like the smallness and
sexiness of
the SliMP3 (I am trying to get rid of as many boxes as possible cluttering
up
my living space). The open source code and responsiveness of the developers
is
a real bonus.
Having a
server is not a problem for me - you have to put the music somewhere and on
my
server I can play it from any PC or the
SliMP3.
The
SliMP3 does not really have a Wallwart, its a small brick - like a laptop
only
its the smallest I've ever seen about the size of a packet of cigarettes,
so
you have to fit a 13amp plug which is not too technically
challenging!
At
the
end of the day you pay your money and make your choice. - Good luck with
your
choice I'm pleased with mine!

Er....
no.....
He
said
the AT _COAX_ outputs.
The
only
COAX outputs on the AT are the analogue ones. The digital output is, AIUI,
Toslink.
I've
read
and re-read the comment three or four times, and I can't work out whether
he
made a simple error and _was_ talking about the digital out on the AT, or
whether he was being a techy and used the word "coax" for the
analogue.
I
also
note that the Meridian reference was:
1:
Amps,
not decoders
2: A different person writing
David
Toop mentioned Meridians. The reference to the "can't tell the
difference" was in a message that he quoted.... there's nothing to
suggest
that the writer of THAT was using Meridians.
In
fact,
the writer of the "can't tell the difference" was using a pair of
Sennheisers. OK cans, but hardly audiophile.
Regards,
Mark

Errr, actually it said that the slimp3 analog was the same as

Actually
it said a bit more than that even...
...The
guy said he was using a Meridian decoder so he was saying
that
the analogue feed from the
SliMP3
through the Meridian sounded as good
as the digital feed from the
AudioTron decoded by the Meridian.
Having
said that it shouldn't be too much of a task to reroute the
analogue feed within the
AudioTron
if it is an issue that it picks up
noise from the PSU. What is
more of
a concern is that they have simply
paralleled up the line out
sockets
on the back panel and the headphone
output which isn't generally a
good
idea.
