Jason,
I
see
that you experimented a lot with graphic cards. What should I pay attention
to,
when buying one with TV out.
The
similar question applies to TV capture cards.
I
currently have Hauppauge WinTV Go and some SuperGrace (ATI based) VGA with
TV
out card, but I'm not happy with either.
What
kind of cards I need to buy to get kind of picture quality compared to
TiVo?
If I
have such cards and want to input RF and play it on TV, I asume that signal
is
converted PAL->VGA->PAL and quality suffers.
Is it
possible to preserve image in PAL format without any
conversion?
Nik
I would say that depends on the
card you are using in the pc!
Tivo uses rgb IF you have it as input
and
output. On my config, which is ntl digital the input is rgb. To my semi
trained eye, on a good tv set, rgb is clearer than any other signal,
which
is only logical.
This quality difference is most noticeable on
computer
generated screens. Like menus in the guide, or a windows pc on a tv. It
does make interlacing more obvious however.
For example, matrox
g400
dual head cards have 3 possible outputs. composite s-video and scart rgb
(if you make the cable yourself).
Scart rgb gives a *MUCH* sharper
picture then anthing else, on computer type screens.
There is
nothing sub pro capture prices that I can find that will CAPTURE with
scart
rgb like the tivo does. pc based that can capture in scart rgb.
That
accepted, with a good card the tv output quality can be close.
The
advantage of Tivo is the interface. and the watch while record, and
the on
screen overlays, which are all fixable in showshifter if it gets there
in time.
The reason I bought the Tivo is to compare the two. So
far
after the 2.5.x upgrade Tivo does a very good job.
