Re: how does raid work

Some motherboards carry ide raid solutions.

Abit bd7 raid uses highpoint controller chips.

The other main ide raid chipset is from promise (around longer back into ata33 days!)

My main dev machine runs 2 striped drives for speed.

The server runs fastrack 66 in mirror config.

All the cheap ide raid cards only have raid 0 , 1 and 0+1

0 is stripe
1 is mirror
0 +1 is a striped pair, thats also mirrored to another two drives.
oh, and jbod, but thats just all the drives appearing as 1 big drive.

There are other levels of raid such as 5 are not supported on such systems.=

Checkout www.storagereview.com for lots more info.

I bought the InnoVision AP-1680 IDE raid controller last week, along with two 40Gb drives. This card supports RAIR:

0 - striping
1 - mirroring
0+1 - striped/mirror (if you have four drives)

Installed perfectly into W2k server, and is now running my new firewall and=
Exchange Server. A very cheap solution (the card is only =A320), and easy t= o
install and setup.
