Yeah, EPG and software updates come down the phone line..... its a
dialup to a (IIRC) Pipex POP (freefone). To do it without a phoneline,
you either need a network card, like the TurboNet (I'm waiting on mine
just now from the bulk buy on ukha_turbonet..... not sure if Allan has
actually placed the order yet) from www.9thtee.com or a serial
connection to a PC with a PPP server set up.... you just need a Pronto
serial cable, but you need to put the Tivo drive into a PC to change
some values in config files to make it work.

If you had access to a phone line from time to time (work, relative,
neighbour?) then you *COULD* unplug the Tivo, connect it up there and
force a daily call, then take it back home afterwards..... .but you
obviously couldn't record while it was away from your Sky box etc.......
:S You can probably get away with doing that on the first couple of days
then once a week after that, but its not particularly convenient!
