[OT] Slow Network - WHY?

Wondering if one of you has seen this and hopefully fixed this before.

I am running two Netgear FA311 network cards through a NETVIN switch. 
When
transferring 2Gb over the network it takes 3 & 1/2 hours!!  This
was at
100Mbs full-duplex.  I then tried at 100Mbs half-duplex and this took
12
minutes.  Surely full-duplex is supposed to be quicker isn't it? 
Is this
due to my cheapo switch or cheapo cards? Or could it be due to me not
following any standard when making up the cat5 cables - all I did was
ensure
the colours were the same at both ends. 

Anyone have any ideas or solutions?
