I'd like to be able have the phone system kick into silent/no-ring
mode once I go to bed. I simply do not get up to answer the phone
once I've retired for the night. The ability to answer a call and play
a "please call again at a more appropriate time" message would
be quite nice. Not sure if I'll need a voice modem for this sort of
thing though.

Agreed. I find the Withheld calls frustrating. Was it Bob, Neil or
Graham that just called? Or some double glazing sales folk?

When I was reading around on Meteor interfacing I came across a
web site that mentioned, och, a system with some TLA I can't
remember now, that if implemented by BT, would allow me to
block number-withheld calls automatically.

I guess an alternative would be a phone answering setup tied in
with CallerID recognition that automatically plays a "Please call
back with your number available" message. I don't know if such
s/w exists. But it would be fun to write.

You know, my current fascination with this sort of stuff almost
puzzles me as I am simply *not* a heavy phone user (except for
calling up the Internet ! I'm not a h/w guy and wiring, chasing
walls, electrics ... that I struggle with ... s/w is more my bag.
