Re: Re: Recommendations for newbie?

>>That's a serial interface card, right?
Yes.  It provides a serial interface to Comfort for using the Comfort
Software for programming but also always Comfort to communicate with other
HA programs and kit like HomeSeer, HomeVision, ACE etc.

>>The Comfort site says the software only works with Win98, not Win2k.
There are two version of the software CSXpress which is the older version
where you need to program everything using the base codes or Comfigurator
that provides a more if then else type interface.  Both versions of the
software work on 98/NT/2000/XP.

>>DEOL resistors?
Double end of line resistors.  This simply allows you to use the same two
wires for both tamper protection and PIR detection instead of two separate
sets.  The way it works is that at the PIR end you put one value of
resistor across the tamper contacts and a different value across the PIR
switch.  Comfort then knows from the resistance on the wire which parts
have been shorten out, tamper, trigger or both.  There are full details in
the installation manual and a jumper setting on the main board to switch
between the DEOL resistor or just using  the standard method of connection.

>>I hope they don't mind talking to me too then.
No ask away, two other groups worth joining for Comfort advice  are

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/comfort/
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/comfort-technical/

I fitted my own system and its not that difficult from a cabling point of
view.  The hardest bit is getting the programming how you want it but if
your like most HA folk that's the bit you'll want to play with anyway.

Paul,

Thanks for the reply. It's good to hear from someone who's already
automated.

I've noticed a 1/2 second lag from the few X10 modules I have, and up
to 3 seconds lag when using a PC to respond to X10 triggers.

That's a serial interface card, right? Does that mean I can program
Comfort using a nice interface instead of complicated command codes?
The Comfort site says the software only works with Win98, not Win2k.
Do you know if that's true?

DEOL resistors? What are they for? [Tsk! Newbie questions! ;-)] Is it
possible to fit myself if I have guidance from members of this group?
I don't want a fitter to do everything otherwise I'd never understand
how Comfort works.

That also is a concern. If they're anything like the electricians
I've had round...!

I hope they don't mind talking to me too then. :-) Thanks for your
help.

Gary.
