Alarm cable is usually stranded to permit flexing....Cat 5 cable is better quality but not as flexible.. it is fine for PIR's if the route is fixed and not subject to the cables being moved...decorating etc... additionally it is important to check continuity before alarming the system as the cat 5 can break while being routed (same happens with stranded, but not so often)....
 
Using shielded is a waste of money...it is not needed... for a direct wired contact, which is not affected by interference...

I asume that CAT5, CAT5e, CAT are all fine.
Can someone confirm please?
