If you're looking for a book that's a bit more DIY level try the Which
Book
of Wiring and Lighting.

<<On a lighter note, when you say you put extra sockets in, did you
just
'daisy chain' them off of the existing socket, or lay new to the
consumer
unit?>>
There are definite rules here that you MUST follow.
You are allowed to run ONE double socket from and existing socket that
is
part of a ring main - this is called a 'spur'.
You cannot run a spur from a spur.
The exception to this rule is if you FUSE the spur first - you can then
run
as many sockets as you like beyond the fuse.
Cable should be 2.5 sq mm twin and earth.
There is some information (not comprehensive) about adding new power
sockets
on my website at http://www.home-automation.info
An invaluable book for this sort of thing is the IEE On Site Guide
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0852969295/markmccall
A bit
technical in places, but recommended so you don't end up burning your
house
down or electrocuting somebody.
