The best free firewall would be ipcop. (www.ipcop.org)
It is Linux, but it's an "all in one" install, so it will
install=
the (stripped down, patched, hardended) Linux it needs for you.
If you have (lots of) money to throw at the problem, go for Checkpoint

I sort of agree and disagree with what you say:

I disagree that the solution is to run other services on a firewall. PC
hardware is _not_ capable of serving firewall functions as well as

If you are going to go to the trouble of having a firewall, then do it
properly. Don't compromise it by adding lots of security holes.
