Thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions
(esp. Mark and Mary for giving up a Saturday afternoon). I’ve now got
the
following set up on my living room floor for testing purposes (good job
I’m
single)
Alcatel 510 DSL router
Linksys 8 port switch
2 x WAP 11s
All took about an hour to set up out of the box,
plus
a scary half hour where I thought a failed firmware update had fried one of
the
WAPs! Using 3 workstations plus the router with the switch gives far better
performance than peer-peer networking even with encryption turned
on.
For those of you using these in corporate
settings,
is there a minimum recommended channel spacing between adjacent APs, and do
they operate on a hand-off basis like cellular phones should do, or are
they
like cellular phones really work, and you have to loose the signal from the
really weak base station before you can log on to the base station you are
less
than a foot away from?
Any resources that can point me in the direction
of
encryption together with XP, and is it possible to mix 128 and 64 bit
encryption (I’m pretty sure that one is a no-no)? In particular what
is
the difference between open and shared key, and both?
Tim – who’s been using wireless for
ages,
but only peer-peer.
